Mom Strangled Infant to Death as She “Did not want Her Baby to Suffer as the World is Crazy”

A Colorado mother has admitted to second-degree murder in connection with her 2-month-old son’s death in 2023, as reported by a news release from Boulder County.

Following her guilty plea on August 7th, Anna Englund, aged 31, was swiftly handed a 40-year prison sentence. Englund had first-degree murder charges dropped as part of a plea deal after strangling his son, Miles Basellio, to death.

“This guilty plea and lengthy sentence is the right result in this very sad case,” District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated in the news release. “It is heartbreaking to acknowledge the immense emotional toll on the baby’s father and family, as well as all the police officers who desperately tried to prevent this tragic murder.”

According to authorities, a woman in need of a welfare check due to a possible mental health crisis prompted a call to the police on June 10, 2023, at approximately 4:30 p.m., as reported by 9 NBC News.

Miles’ father had expressed worry about Englund’s mental well-being and how they were interacting with the infant. Englund took advantage of a momentary absence to depart the residence with the child. They drove to a specific location where a tragic incident occurred.

According to an affidavit obtained by The Denver Post, she eventually admitted to the tragic act of ending the baby’s life, stating that she didn’t want him to experience the same suffering she had endured.

According to the affidavit, she expressed concern to authorities about the potential dangers Miles could face due to the unpredictable nature of the world.

Upon receiving information about the mother and child’s disappearance, officers promptly issued an alert to local law enforcement agencies in an effort to locate Englund. Englund drove around with the baby for several hours while law enforcement continued their search.

After approximately six hours since the welfare check was requested, Englund was discovered at a hospital with the child, who had unfortunately passed away. According to the affidavit, Englund later admitted to the police that she had been searching for a location to end her life.

According to court records cited by 9 NBC News, Englund had been to the hospital twice before the June 2023 incident due to suicidal ideation. According to Miles’ father, Englund was treated at Boulder Community Health, the hospital where they were found. She was discharged after a few days for both visits, as per the doctors.

Despite Englund and Miles’ father revealing her mental health status, a judge ruled her competent to stand trial in November. Nevertheless, she opted for a plea deal.
