Morgan County, MO – A Missouri couple faces felony child abuse charges after allegedly performing a botched home circumcision on a child without medical training.
The Morgan County Prosecuting Attorney charged Tyler Wade Gibson with child abuse and unauthorized surgery. His wife, Bailey Alexus Gibson, also faces child abuse charges, according to court documents.
Incident Details
On Nov. 27, Tyler Gibson allegedly performed the circumcision at their Morgan County home, causing the child to suffer significant physical injuries, according to a probable cause affidavit. Tyler admitted to police that he was not a licensed physician but claimed he had conducted research and “prayed a blessing” before the procedure.
After complications arose, the couple took the child to Lake Regional Hospital, where they sought treatment before the child was transferred to Columbia University Hospital for care by a urologist. Hospital staff later reported the incident to authorities.
During questioning, Tyler allegedly told police he used a “utility tool” for the procedure but was unprepared for the excessive bleeding. He said they left the hospital after waiting for four hours, citing exhaustion.
Authorities reported that Tyler showed officers where the blade was allegedly located, but they were unable to find it during a search.
Charges and Court Appearances
Tyler faces felony charges of child abuse and performing an unauthorized surgery, while Bailey is charged with child abuse for allegedly assisting with the procedure.
Tyler appeared in court on Dec. 3, and Bailey is scheduled for a hearing on Jan. 28.
