The mayor of Canton, Minnesota, is currently dealing with misdemeanor charges related to child abuse in Fillmore County.
A criminal complaint has been filed against Joshua Nordsving from Canton. A woman, who co-parents a 9-year-old child with him, reached out to the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office after observing bruising on the child’s face when she picked them up in Chatfield on October 26.
Court documents reveal that Nordsving confessed to a Fillmore County sheriff’s deputy about hitting the child in the face, acknowledging that he had done so with excessive force. Nordsving showcased a backward swing with his right hand, illustrating the action he took against the child.
Nordsving informed the deputy about persistent behavioral problems he had been experiencing with the child throughout the weekend.
A woman shared with the investigating deputy photographs of the child’s face from October 27, revealing noticeable bruising on the child’s right cheek that appeared to match the outline of a handprint.
Nordsving is confronted with a serious charge of malicious punishment of a child, along with two misdemeanor charges related to domestic assault. He is set to appear in court for the first time on December 30.
Nordsving secured another term as mayor of Canton in the recent general election held in November. He faced no opposition, securing 85% of the support with a total of 116 votes.
