Michigan Mother Arrested after Twins Found in Skeletal State; One Dead and One Fighting for Life: Police

A mother in Michigan has been arrested and is currently in jail following the tragic death of one of her 19-month-old twins, who weighed only 13 pounds. The other twin is currently fighting for their life in the hospital, as reported by the police.

A tragic incident occurred when Brooklynne Davis, 24, contacted the Grand Rapids police at approximately 5:20 p.m. on August 22nd. She discovered the lifeless body of her 19-month-old daughter.

Law enforcement and medical professionals swiftly arrived at the scene, where they discovered the young girl in a condition that was unfortunately beyond assistance, as stated in an official statement. In addition, the girl’s twin brother was discovered in a state of extreme danger and was immediately transported to the hospital for ongoing critical care.

In addition, there was an 8-year-old present in the residence who did not require medical attention. Child Protective Services has assumed custody of the child.

The Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the girl’s death as a homicide. Prosecutors have filed charges against Davis for murder and child abuse.

“This is one of the most horrific cases of child abuse I have ever seen,” Grand Rapids police Chief Eric Winstrom said in a statement. “Neither the first responders, or the detectives who worked tirelessly for justice, will ever forget this child. We are praying for the recovery of her twin brother who also suffered unconscionable abuse.”

Local news outlets WOOD and WMMT have obtained an arrest affidavit that provides the identity of the girl as Skii Swope. The affidavit highlighted that Skii’s eyes appeared sunken and their bones were visible. Additionally, Davis noted that she had wounds which he believed were caused by diaper rash. According to the medical examiner, the cause of the girl’s death was determined to be starvation and malnutrition.

According to the affidavit, it was stated that the individual intentionally neglected to provide adequate nourishment to the child, resulting in severe dehydration for Skii.

According to reports, Davis informed investigators that she had put the children to bed at around 10 p.m. the previous night and did not check on them until 8 a.m. According to the affidavit, she didn’t check on them again until five hours later, when she discovered that Skii was “cold to the touch.” Davis referred to the girl as “dead weight.”

An affidavit reportedly stated that the home was infested with bed bugs and lice, and that authorities discovered an emaciated dog that was using the bathroom indoors. Additionally, a bathtub contained a significant amount of unclean water, covered by a visible layer of film. According to the affidavit, the children slept on a mattress that was soiled.

According to reports, Davis would reportedly neglect the children for extended periods of time, choosing to engage in activities such as consuming alcohol and using her phone. According to reports, there were instances when she would delay feeding and changing their diapers for up to 15 hours. When she fed them, she provided them with a variety of food options including chicken nuggets, French toast sticks, and protein shakes.

“The smell in her apartment is overwhelming,” neighbor Brianna Robinson told WMMT. “It’s impossible to stay in there for too long.” Her apartment had a strong odor and was infested with gnats, creating a rather dismal atmosphere. It was absolutely dreadful.

During an interview with WOOD, Winstrom expressed his difficulty in comprehending the state of the home and the well-being of the children. He described the conditions as extremely unfavorable.

“The images of this baby and the abuse inflicted upon this child are incredibly distressing. They have left a lasting impact on me and will be hard to forget,” he expressed.

Davis is currently being held at the Kent County Jail without the possibility of bond.
