Measles Case Confirmed in Detroit; Kid Infected After Travelling Overseas

Detroit, MI: Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has reported the first confirmed case of measles in Michigan since 2019. An Oakland County child who was going abroad fell ill with the illness.

Measles is highly contagious. Dr. Gretchen Snoyenbos Newman from the DMC described it as one of the most contagious viruses.

Michigan’s current measles immunization rate stands at 83.6% for children aged 19-35 months.

Newman expressed that the level was alarmingly low. Experts in pediatric infectious diseases, pediatricians, and the public health sector have been sounding the alarm about declining childhood vaccination rates, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic, with measles being a crucial component of childhood vaccination.

Michigan’s most recent case of measles occurred in 2019. Over 40 individuals, aged between eight months and 63 years, fell ill.

MDDHS is urging anyone aged one year and above to receive the measles immunization.

Measles cases have also been coming up in Florida. Measles is a highly infectious disease with a very negating range of symptoms. Everyone should get a vaccine to build immunity against the disease and protect yourself from this hovering danger.
