A jury in Charles County has reached a verdict after a three-day trial, finding 25-year-old Katravien Tyrieus Vercher from Waldorf guilty on five counts of Sexual Abuse of a Minor and one count of Third-Degree Sexual Offense.
On March 22, 2023, law enforcement officials from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a home in Waldorf following allegations of child sexual abuse.
Upon arrival, officers engaged with the mother of the juvenile victims. A mother has come forward with allegations that Vercher engaged in sexual abuse against three of her children spanning a period of three years.
An inquiry uncovered that Vercher took up residence with the victims and their mother at their home in Waldorf in 2020. Vercher started mistreating the victims shortly after relocating.
The individuals affected were aged 5, 6, and 10 at the onset of the events. Initially, Vercher inquired if the 10-year-old victim was interested in playing a game, to which she agreed. Vercher subsequently initiated inappropriate advances toward the victim.
The inappropriate interactions with the 10-year-old victim persisted consistently for three years and escalated in severity. He devised a secret phrase to communicate with the victim in the presence of others, signaling his desire for sexual interaction.
Vercher was involved in inappropriate activities with the other two underage victims as well. There was an instance where the two youngest individuals were in attendance during the inappropriate act simultaneously.
After enduring the abuse, one of the victims confided in their mother, prompting her to contact law enforcement.
Throughout the investigation, Vercher acknowledged making remarks regarding the 10-year-old victim’s looks and expressed an attraction to her appearance. He also confessed that he inappropriately touched her buttocks.
Vercher’s sentencing is scheduled for December 16, 2024. He could be sentenced to a staggering 115 years behind bars.
