According to officials, a good Samaritan intervened when a convicted sex offender, who had just been released from prison, attempted to sexually assault a college student in South Carolina.
According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, 57-year-old Darrell Scott Brooks is facing numerous counts, including as abduction, grand theft, and assault with the purpose to engage in criminal sexual behavior.
After claiming to work at Clemson University and having a car that had “broken down,” deputies allege that Brooks approached the student at an off-campus housing complex late Tuesday and requested for a ride.
Brooks allegedly assaulted her with a “folding razor blade knife” and pinned her down as she drove the man to campus in a church parking lot. As chance would have it, a passerby heard the woman’s cries for aid and stopped to help. The woman managed to get away thanks to the generous Samaritan. Following this, Brooks allegedly made off with the woman’s car.
According to officials, deputies from the nearby Oconee County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop, and as Brooks fled, they witnessed him crash in the Seneca area. His next stop was in the Oconee County Jail. In order to assist the student in her recuperation, representatives from Clemson University are in touch with her.
“Protecting the integrity of this investigation is paramount in providing justice for this victim,” deputies said.
The sheriff’s office indicated that Brooks had “just released from a heavy sentencing in the spring.” In South Carolina, Brooks’ name appears on the registry of convicted sex offenders. It reveals that in November 2003, he was found guilty of first-degree criminal sexual behavior. He allegedly sexually assaulted a woman, detained her for fifteen hours, and threatened to stab her to death, according to the Post & Courier.
