GILROY, Calif. — A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a Safeway employee inside a Gilroy grocery store Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Attack Inside Gilroy Safeway
Officers responded to reports of a stabbing at the Safeway located on the 900 block of First Street shortly after the incident occurred. When police arrived, they found a 51-year-old male employee suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in stable condition, according to authorities.
The suspect, identified as Derek Bell, was located by officers outside the store and detained without incident.
What Happened Inside the Store
Witnesses told police that Bell entered the store and walked into an employee-only area, where he was asked to leave. Instead of complying, Bell allegedly assaulted a female employee by throwing an object at her and striking her with it.
When a second employee intervened and told Bell to leave, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed him, police said. Bell then walked out of the store before being located and arrested by responding officers.
Arrest and Charges
Bell was taken into custody and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on attempted murder charges. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, though authorities said there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public.
Community and Police Response
Police praised the quick response of employees and first responders who helped ensure the safety of others inside the store.
The Gilroy Police Department is continuing to investigate and is urging any witnesses or customers who may have seen the incident to come forward with information.
