NEW YORK CITY — A dramatic crash in Midtown Manhattan early Saturday morning ended with the arrest of a 40-year-old man accused of stealing a Porsche and leading police on a short chase through the city, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Porsche Stolen from Union Square
Police said the incident began around 3 p.m. Saturday, when the owner of a Porsche left the luxury vehicle running with the keys inside near Union Square. Moments later, the car was stolen.
Fortunately for investigators, an iPhone left inside the vehicle allowed officers to track the Porsche’s location in real time.
Chase Ends in Midtown Crash
Officers followed the stolen Porsche for about two miles, eventually catching up with it near 50th Street and Lexington Avenue in Midtown. According to police, the driver lost control, crashing into several unoccupied parked cars before the vehicle flipped onto its roof.
Video captured at the scene shows the overturned Porsche surrounded by emergency vehicles as police worked to take the suspect into custody.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
The driver, identified as Calvin Jones, 40, was arrested at the scene and faces multiple charges, including grand larceny and resisting arrest. Police say Jones has two prior arrests for assault.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities confirmed no bystanders were injured in the crash. The Porsche sustained significant damage, and investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from both Union Square and the crash site.
The NYPD once again reminded residents to never leave vehicles running or unlocked, even for brief moments.
