Man Abused Several Toddlers at Daycare and Hid Recorded Abuse on his Phone; Sentenced in Texas

A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after federal authorities revealed that he concealed images of himself committing sexual assaults against preschool-aged children within a calculator app on his phone, as announced on Friday.

Humberto Barreto Jr. faced indictment in January and entered a guilty plea in June regarding two counts related to the production of child pornography. He has been mandated to register as a sex offender.

Court documents reveal that the inquiry was initiated after Barreto Jr.’s former girlfriend informed law enforcement about finding internet searches related to child pornography on his mobile device. Upon confrontation, Barreto Jr. acknowledged his use of cryptocurrency to buy child sexual abuse images, stating that “age did not matter” to him.

Officials reported that a forensic investigation uncovered numerous images and a minimum of 30 recordings depicting the sexual exploitation of minors, including very young children. Authorities discovered a storage application camouflaged as a calculator, in which Barreto Jr. concealed videos of his sexual assaults on young girls aged 4 and 5, as stated in court documents.

The investigation was spearheaded by the Dallas Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations in collaboration with the Howard County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the Big Spring Police Department.

“This lengthy sentence is proof that this defendant’s deviant behavior of victimizing and sexually exploiting children will not stand, “said Travis Pickard, Special Agent in Charge of HSI Dallas.
