WINNIE, Texas – A major crash late Friday night forced the closure of all eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near mile marker 828 in Winnie, according to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).
The crash, which occurred around 8 p.m., prompted a heavy response from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and local deputies, who are currently assisting with traffic control and diversion efforts.
Eastbound Lanes Closed, Service Road Remains Open
Sheriff Brian Hawthorne confirmed that all eastbound lanes of I-10 are completely shut down as emergency crews work to clear the scene and investigate the cause of the crash.
“Our deputies are assisting with traffic diversion as all eastbound lanes are shut down at this time,” Sheriff Hawthorne said. “The south service road remains open for travel.”
Authorities are directing vehicles onto alternate routes, advising motorists to expect significant delays and to exercise caution while traveling through the area.
Drivers Advised to Use Caution and Seek Alternate Routes
Officials have not released details regarding injuries or the number of vehicles involved, but crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours.
The south service road is open and being used as the primary detour for eastbound traffic, though congestion is expected due to the high volume of diverted vehicles.
Motorists traveling between Chambers County and Beaumont are urged to monitor local traffic updates and plan alternate routes if possible.
The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office posted a traffic alert on its Facebook page shortly after the incident, urging drivers to slow down, remain patient, and stay alert for law enforcement officers directing traffic.
Investigation Underway
The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation into the crash. Deputies from Chambers County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with lane closures and scene management while wreckage is being cleared.
Authorities have not confirmed when the highway will fully reopen.
For drivers planning to travel east on Interstate 10 Friday night, officials recommend using U.S. Highway 90 or State Highway 73 as alternate routes until normal traffic flow resumes.
