Long Beach Parents Arrested After Death of 14-Month-Old Girl in Ongoing Child Abuse Case

LONG BEACH, Calif. — A heartbreaking case of alleged child abuse has led to the arrest of a Long Beach father and stepmother, who are now facing murder, torture, and child abuse causing death charges following the death of a 14-month-old girl, according to Long Beach Police.

Child Found Unresponsive with Signs of Trauma

Police said officers were called to a local hospital on November 7 after the toddler was found unresponsive and showing visible signs of trauma. Medical personnel immediately notified authorities of possible abuse, prompting Child Abuse detectives to launch an investigation in coordination with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).

Later that same day, hospital staff informed investigators that the child had been placed on life support and was not expected to survive. Homicide detectives joined the case soon afterward.

Despite medical efforts, the 14-month-old girl succumbed to her injuries on November 10. Her identity has not been released due to her age.

Father and Stepmother Arrested

After a two-week investigation, authorities concluded that the child had endured ongoing abuse, ultimately leading to her death. Detectives identified the child’s father, Alfredo Munoz, 40, and stepmother, Kelly Munoz, 34, as the primary suspects.

Both were arrested on November 25 and booked into the Long Beach City Jail on charges of murder, torture, and child abuse resulting in death. Officials confirmed that the pair are being held without bail.

“This case represents one of the most tragic and disturbing incidents our detectives have investigated,” a police spokesperson said. “No child should ever experience such cruelty.”

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the case next week for formal filing consideration. Authorities said more information may be released after charges are finalized.

The Long Beach Police Department emphasized its ongoing collaboration with DCFS to ensure the safety of any other children connected to the suspects.

Community Urged to Speak Up

Officials are urging anyone with information related to the case to contact Homicide Detectives at 562-570-7244. Anonymous tips can also be shared via L.A. Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.

The tragic death has shaken the Long Beach community, reigniting calls for greater vigilance and intervention in suspected child abuse cases.
