A 46-year-old man named Chris Culbertson was attacked and killed by several dogs in Kansas City, Missouri this week.
A security camera from a neighbor recorded the incident.
Authorities are looking into the matter, with support from the Kansas City Pet Project Animal Services Division.
“Just heartbroken,” the man’s sister Angela Culbertson said.
“I cannot believe that some dogs could do this to a human.”
Angela reports that several Pitt Bulls attacked and fatally injured her brother. According to Angela, Culbertson was a dog lover and had once owned a pit bull.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, close to 80th and College.
A security camera from a neighbor captures Culbertson riding his bike on the street. Two dogs begin to circle around, causing him trouble and nipping at him.
Culbertson ultimately collapses to the ground. Next, two additional dogs burst through the fence and launch an attack, gripping his arms, legs, feet, and face with their teeth.
“He told me, ‘They were trying to drag me like I was their dinner,’” Angela said.
FOX4 opted not to air the complete video because of the unsettling content. Angela reported that the assault continued for 23 minutes.
“I couldn’t imagine being bitten and torn by anything for 23 minutes,” she said.
Angela reported that Culbertson suffered from 300 bites, received 500 stitches, and endured over 100 lacerations. He developed sepsis and passed away just days following the attack.
“He said, ‘I was reaching for help, and nobody was helping me,’” Angela said.
A neighbor, who preferred to remain off-camera, shared that she rushed to assist that night and attempted to fend off the dogs with a golf club, but the animals began to bite her. She sprinted and dialed emergency services.
“The most aggressive one was on the backpack and it could’ve been his head or his neck because he was literally ripping him around by that backpack,” Angela said.
Authorities reported that officers responded by activating their lights and sirens to drive off the dogs. FOX4 inquired about the current status of the dogs from the Kansas City Pet Project, but they referred the question to KCPD.
KCPD reported that detectives, TRT, and KCPP collaborated to take custody of the dogs. On Friday, FOX4 spotted a dog on the property while in the area.
A neighbor reported that the owner claimed the dogs are trained for fighting with other dogs. Chris’ family expressed their desire for the dog’s owner to face consequences.
“I mean, the people that own the dogs need to be held accountable for this,” Angela said.
“This is murder, and they taught these dogs to do that and it’s their dogs. So, it’s their responsibility.”
