DES MOINES, Iowa — Snowfall across southern Iowa is beginning to taper off, but residents should brace for another blast of arctic air expected to bring near-record cold temperatures by midweek, according to the latest forecast from KCCI meteorologist Jason Sydejko.
Light Snow and Cold Conditions Persist
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday for about two dozen counties across southern and southeastern Iowa. Light snow will continue through the day, leaving behind less than one inch of accumulation in most areas.
Temperatures will stay cold throughout the day, with highs near 23°F and winds from the south-southwest at 5 to 10 mph.
Slight Midweek Warm-Up Before Deep Freeze
The forecast shows a brief reprieve Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs climbing into the low 30s under mostly cloudy skies. However, another strong arctic front is expected to arrive Wednesday night, pushing morning lows below zero across central Iowa by Thursday.
For Des Moines, forecasters are calling for a low near -6°F, which would tie the city’s record low for the date. Thursday’s highs will remain frigid, reaching only the low to mid-teens despite sunshine.
Weekend Outlook: Gradual Rebound Before Next System
After the bitter cold, temperatures are expected to rebound into the 30s on Friday and Saturday. However, meteorologists are monitoring another potential winter system that could bring additional snow or mixed precipitation late in the weekend.
