A man from Inglewood remembers being attacked outside his home and being scared for his life while being yelled at racial slurs.
At 6:40 a.m. on April 15, 41-year-old Javier Ibarra was on his way to work when he opened a gate outside his home on the 200 block of West Hyde Park Boulevard.
Surveillance video showed the male suspect running up behind Ibarra and hitting him in the head while his back was turned towards the gate.
The suspect, who had on a facemask, gloves, and a green hoodie and sweatpants that matched, hits Ibarra in the head and face over and over while he tries to protect himself.
“He ran around my truck and yelled quickly, ‘You f Mexican!'” “I told him, ‘I hate you,’ and he began to punch me,” Ibarra remembered.
Ibarra can be heard screaming in pain as the attacker finally grabs him and throws him to the ground.
He said, “There was a lot of blood all over my face.” “I had one eye closed all the way.” The moment I hit the ground, I thought, “This guy is going to kill me.” It was a terrible situation. “I had no idea what to do.”
At one point, Ibarra can be heard calling for help and his wife’s name while the man keeps hitting and kicking him.
The suspect was able to get away, but his wife was caught on camera stepping outside and quickly running back inside to get her phone to record him.
His house keys were with him as he ran away. Police in Inglewood said that his car was a silver, blue, or green Chevy Malibu sedan.
Ibarra, who is Hispanic, said he didn’t know the man and thinks he may have been the target of a hate crime.
He said, “It’s got to be a hate crime.” “But I don’t understand why.” Even though I’m Hispanic, I’m not trying to cause trouble with anyone.
It is thought that the suspect is between 30 and 40 years old. He’s about 6 feet tall and weighs around 200 pounds.
Ibarra said that his wife and daughter are scared that the attacker might come back while he is still healing from the brutal attack.
Ibarra said, “I’m scared for my daughter more than for myself because she doesn’t want to go to school, play, or go outside.”
