Alexandria, IN – A Madison County couple faces child neglect charges after a 2-year-old boy was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, including multiple skull fractures and extensive bruising.
In mid-November, the toddler was flown to Riley Children’s Hospital after being found unconscious at his family’s home in Alexandria. Medical evaluations revealed the boy suffered from a brain bleed, bruises across his body, burns on his feet, and lacerations on his genital area.
“There are incredible injuries on this child, injuries that are appalling. His entire body is bruised. He had brain bleed. He has lacerations on his penis. It’s just heartbreaking. It’s honestly heartbreaking the injuries this child went through,” said Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings.
Details from the Investigation
Court documents allege the child was being cared for by Maverick Peterson, the mother’s 23-year-old boyfriend, at the time of the incident.
Peterson claimed the injuries resulted from the boy being clumsy and hitting his head on a fish tank. However, medical professionals and investigators disputed his account.
“It would have to be one accident after another after another. It’s no accident. It’s just abuse. It’s a classic case of child abuse,” said Cummings.
“You just have to be very, very careful about who you leave your children with. It’s absolutely essential,” said Cummings.
“You are responsible for protecting that child,” said Cummings. “Call anybody and we’ll put you in touch with social services. There’s no doubt about it. You can get help,” said Cummings.
The child’s mother, Katlyn Conrad, was reportedly working a night shift when the boy was injured. Conrad informed Officer Anderson that the other significant injuries resulted from the boy fidgeting with his genital area during sleep, overly tight diapers, and the boy’s own roughhousing, according to police reports.
Authorities allege she lied to protect Peterson and is also facing child neglect charges.
Legal Proceedings
Peterson’s bond is set at $100,000, and both suspects remain in custody at the Madison County Jail.
Prosecutor Cummings emphasized the importance of protecting children, urging parents to report suspected abuse. “Call the state hotline or social services for help. You are responsible for protecting that child,” he said.
If you suspect child abuse or need assistance, contact the Indiana Department of Child Services or local authorities. Help is available to ensure children’s safety.
