LYNCHBURG, Va. — Central Virginia woke up to bitterly cold temperatures Monday morning as another Weather Alert Day was issued for dangerously low wind chills across the region.
Temperatures Plunge Into the Teens
According to the WSET First Warning Weather Team, morning temperatures dipped to around 10 degrees, with wind chills well below freezing for most of the day. Afternoon highs are expected to reach only the low 30s, making it one of the coldest starts of the season.
Meteorologists warn that anyone heading out early should bundle up, as exposed skin could quickly become at risk for frostbite in these conditions.
Sunshine Returns, But the Cold Persists
Despite the frigid air, sunny skies will dominate the forecast Monday as a strong area of high pressure settles in over Virginia. This system will also bring dry weather through midweek, though temperatures will remain below average.
By Tuesday morning, lows are expected to drop back near 20 degrees, before rebounding into the mid-40s by the afternoon.
Warming Trend Midweek
The chill will finally begin to ease by Wednesday, as temperatures rise closer to seasonal averages. Snow from earlier systems has completely melted, and forecasters expect milder air and bright sunshine to return.
Looking ahead, showers are possible Thursday, followed by pleasant and partly sunny conditions to close out the week. Highs will remain in the 40s and 50s heading into the weekend.
