Former NBA Coach Files Lawsuit; Alleges Multiple Counts of Sexual Abuse by Doctor with Indiana University

Honk News – In a shocking revelation, former NBA player and coach Butch Carter has filed an amended lawsuit, alleging that he was sexually abused by the doctor associated with the Indiana University basketball team during his time on the roster.

Carter, a former player for the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Lakers, and other NBA teams, as well as a head coach for the Toronto Raptors, has become the fifth ex-Indiana University basketball player to reveal that he raised concerns with the iconic coach Bobby Knight regarding Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr.’s practice of conducting unnecessary rectal examinations on young, healthy athletes.

This month, an amended complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, featuring his account and alleging that school officials neglected to safeguard student-athletes from Bomba.

Carter has joined the lawsuit against the Indiana University trustees and veteran men’s basketball trainer Tim Garl, who is alleged to have been aware of the sexual abuse complaints yet failed to take action. This lawsuit was initially filed in October with two plaintiffs.

Carter and the others have filed a lawsuit under a federal law that mandates all colleges and universities receiving federal funding to implement measures to safeguard students against sexual predators.

The lawsuit claims that in 1979 at the university’s Assembly Hall, Bomba “put on gloves, applied lubricant to his fingers and instructed Carter to bend over the table” before he inserted at least one of his fingers into Carter’s anus.

Carter, 66, a former member of the men’s basketball team from 1976 to 1980, revealed that he had never undergone a rectal examination by any doctor during a physical check-up.

The lawsuit reveals that shortly after the incident, Carter voiced his concerns to Knight, who coached the Hoosiers from 1971 to 2000; team trainer Bob Young; and George Taliaferro, an official in the university president’s office, regarding the actions of Dr. Bomba, Sr.

Carter revealed in the lawsuit that during his NBA career, he underwent regular annual physical exams conducted by team doctors, noting that only one of these exams, which took place during a training camp, included a rectal examination due to a swollen prostate he was experiencing at that time.

Carter revealed in his affidavit that he raised concerns about Bomba to senior officials in the athletic department long before the four other plaintiffs — John Flowers, Haris Mujezinovic, Charlie Miller, and Larry Richardson Jr. — reportedly faced abuse.
