Honk News – A Central Florida educator faces allegations of child abuse following an incident involving a 12-year-old student, during which he reportedly pushed the child.
Authorities in Hillsborough County have taken John Steele, a 34-year-old educator, into custody after looking into a situation concerning a 12-year-old pupil at Jennings Middle School.
On December 18, 2024, authorities reported being notified of a disturbance occurring during a gym class. The investigation revealed that while the student was engaged in a game of volleyball, an accidental strike occurred when the ball hit Steele on the chin following her attempt to kick it.
Steele reportedly started shouting at the student, approached her, positioned his foot behind her, and forcefully pushed her onto her back with his left arm while still yelling. The student showed no visible injuries but mentioned feeling back pain.
On December 23, Steele was taken into custody and charged with a single count of child abuse.
“No child should ever feel threatened or unsafe by their teacher. This behavior is unacceptable, especially from someone entrusted with caring for and guiding our kids,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “This arrest serves as a reminder that we will not tolerate behavior that jeopardizes the safety of our community’s most vulnerable members.”
