A man from Broken Bow is facing legal consequences following an incident in which an infant sustained serious injuries, resulting in hospitalization.
Adam Schaefer, 30, faces charges in Custer County Court for intentional child abuse that led to injury and for making false reports.
On September 29, a sergeant from the Broken Bow Police responded to a call at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center regarding a 15-day-old infant with a head injury, as detailed in an arrest affidavit. The document detailed that the baby suffered from significant bruising, an acute subdural hematoma, a left parietal with an extra hemisphere fissure, an extra-axial hematoma, a right parietal skull fracture, and a fractured pelvis.
The father, Schaefer, reported that he was trying to secure the infant in the car seat when the child accidentally bumped his head on the cat door and then jerked his head back. A radiologist concluded that the injuries were inconsistent with Schaefer’s account, according to the affidavit.
The document indicated that the baby was taken to Children’s Hospital in Omaha for additional care.
During a conversation with a Nebraska State Patrol investigator on September 30, Schaefer admitted to taking the infant for a drive, where he struck the child three times with an open hand before forcefully placing him in the car seat.
Schaefer’s bond is established at $250,000, requiring him to post 10% for his release from custody. The upcoming court session is scheduled for 10 a.m. on October 28.
