Two people were killed in a crash in the Vermont-Slauson neighbourhood of Los Angeles on Monday. Witnesses say the driver was going over 100 mph and running red lights.
The accident involving two cars happened on Vermont Avenue near West 66th Street just after 5:45 a.m.
Officer Cervantes of the Los Angeles Police Department stated that when officers arrived on the scene, they found two dead bodies.
Later, LAPD Detective Moreno said that the people who died were driving east in a silver car with a green light when they were hit by a southbound Toyota Rav4. Witnesses said the driver was going over 100 mph and through red lights.
“The driver and a woman inside were both killed when the car hit something,” Moreno said. He also said that the driver was a guy in his 40s and the passenger was a woman in her 20s.
People who saw what happened said the woman may have been pregnant. “That hasn’t been confirmed yet,” Moreno said.
A video from the scene showed pieces of the accident lying all over the road, which was closed off with yellow warning tape.
The names of the dead have not been made public.
At first, police thought someone had left the scene, but Moreno later said that agents were still trying to figure out how many people were in the suspect’s car.
“The driver of the second car and the front passenger were actually taken to a nearby hospital.” Moreno said, “We’ve heard that there may have been a third person in the back passenger seat.”
It was said that the driver’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
