Dog Euthanized after Attack Left Woman Dead and Husband Injured in Boston; Community Shocked after Mauling Death

Boston Animal Control officials announced on Tuesday that the pit bull involved in a tragic attack in Roxbury, which resulted in the death of a woman, injuries to her husband, and harm to two police officers, has been euthanized.

A pit bull named “Deuce” attacked Jeriline Brady McGinnis in a first-floor unit of a Roxbury home owned by civil rights leader Jean McGuire just before 5:00 p.m., as reported by Boston police. McGinnis was taken to a nearby hospital, where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.

“She’s a wonderful person. A very generous, a very loving person. Loved animals,” McGuire said of McGinnis. “I’ve lost my sister. She’s a sister.”

McGinnis’ husband sustained significant injuries but is anticipated to recover from the attack, as stated by McGuire.

Two officers who responded were bitten by the dog, leading another officer to shoot at the animal. Animal Control reported that the dog was taken to Angell Animal Medical Center for treatment, but due to his deteriorating condition and bleak outlook, the decision was made to euthanize him.

Both officers were taken to a local hospital and are anticipated to recover well.

“I heard two shots, and I saw that the dog was down. About a minute or so later, less than that, I heard a third shot,” said one neighbor. “It was terrible.”

Three additional pit bulls have been taken from the residence and are now in the care of Boston’s Veterinary Medical Director.
