Deputy and Officer Seriously Injured in Fort Pierce Traffic Stop Crash

FORT PIERCE — The Florida Highway Patrol says that a crash in Fort Pierce on Saturday night hurt a sheriff’s deputy and a city police officer seriously but not seriously enough to kill them.

The event took place while the deputy sheriff of St. Lucie County and the police officer from Fort Pierce were standing outside their cars during a crime traffic stop on U.S. 1 and North 25th Street. At 11:25 p.m. Saturday, a 41-year-old man from Vero Beach was driving north on 25th Street in the right lane when he hit the back of a sheriff’s car because he didn’t move over.

According to FHP, the contact pushed the deputy’s car forward into the other two police cars and into the two officers.

The driver who caused the accident, whose name was not given, was caught and charged with driving while impaired, the FHP said.
