CHARLESTON, S.C. – The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston has issued a warning for dense fog across portions of the South Carolina Lowcountry and Southeast Georgia, remaining in effect until 3 a.m. Monday.
Areas Under Alert
According to the NWS, visibility will drop to one-quarter mile or less at times overnight as fog expands across the region. The advisory covers Inland and Coastal Colleton, Inland and Coastal Jasper, Allendale, Hampton, and Beaufort counties, with conditions also affecting nearby Georgia communities.
The highest risk for significant fog is expected along and west of I-95, including Walterboro, Allendale, Hampton, Savannah, Hinesville, Springfield, Sylvania, Statesboro, Claxton, Metter, and Reidsville.
Meteorologists warn that a Dense Fog Advisory could be upgraded if visibility continues to deteriorate through the early morning hours.
NWS Safety Recommendations
The NWS advises motorists to remain cautious if they must travel during foggy conditions:
- Reduce your speed and allow extra time to reach your destination.
- Use low-beam headlights or fog lights to improve visibility and ensure your vehicle is visible to others.
- Avoid using high beams, which can reflect off fog droplets and worsen glare.
- Keep safe following distances to allow ample time for sudden stops.
- Follow lane markings to stay properly aligned on the road.
- In zero visibility, turn on hazard lights and pull into a safe location such as a parking lot until conditions improve.
If no parking area is available, drivers should pull over as far as possible, keep hazard flashers on, and disengage brake lights to reduce collision risks from approaching vehicles.
Early Morning Commute Impact
Commuters should expect slow-moving traffic and reduced visibility before sunrise. Conditions are expected to improve after 8–9 a.m. Monday as temperatures rise and fog begins to lift.
