Detroit. MI: On Monday, a 58-year-old man from Detroit who was previously ordered to serve between 50 and 100 years in prison for rape and violence was re-sentenced.
Robert Yarbrough, who is presently doing time in a state prison, was re-sentenced in the 3rd Circuit Court in Wayne County for “repeatedly raping and assaulting a Detroit woman he held captive for over 20 hours in December 2017,” according to a press statement issued by the Attorney General of Michigan, Dana Nessel.
Yarbrough handed down his sentence on Monday, which included the following:
- 50–100 years in state jail for three counts of sexual activity that constitutes a criminal offense of the first degree.
- For a single count of kidnapping, the sentence ranges from fifty to one hundred years in jail.
- For one count of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily damage, the sentence ranges from 25 to 50 years in prison.
- For a single conviction of felony assault, the sentence ranges from five to fifteen years in prison.
According to the release, Yarbrough held the woman captive in a house that was empty and severely abused, choked, tormented, and raped her for a period of several hours.
“During a brief instance when Yarbrough left the house, the victim was able to free herself and ran for medical attention, obtaining a sexual assault kit that yielded Yarbrough’s DNA,” the attorney general’s office issued a statement. “Yarbrough was convicted of six felonies and sentenced in December of 2018.”
However, due to a technical error that occurred during the jury selection process in 2018, the Michigan Supreme Court decided to order a retrial of Yarbrough’s convictions a year later in 2023.
“This man’s crimes caused deep emotional wounds beyond the assault, and I am grateful for the victim’s courage that ultimately allowed him to be held accountable,” said to Nessel in the press release.
