Costco has issued a recall of almost 80,000 pounds of butter due to a labeling oversight that did not disclose the presence of milk, leading to some eye-rolling reactions from social media users regarding this dairy issue.
In October, an initial recall was issued for 79,200 pounds of Kirkland Signature butter because of an undeclared allergen. The packaging for both salted and unsalted Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter features cream as an ingredient but lacks an allergy warning indicating that the butter “Contains Milk.”
The strange recall has puzzled numerous internet users. The frequent remark: “It’s butter.”

“80,000 pounds of Costco butter was just recalled, because the label doesn’t say that it contains milk. It’s butter. News articles are telling people how they can return, or safely dispose of, the butter. It’s butter,” one person deadpanned.
One social media user joked, “Can y’all please safely dispose of it at my house? I have a lot of holiday baking to do.”
“Next they’ll recall beef that might contain cow,” another added.
Butter, created by churning milk, contains low levels of lactose; however, individuals with a milk allergy may still experience adverse reactions to it. The CDC highlights in the recall that milk is a primary food responsible for many serious allergic reactions in the United States.
