Bullet Strikes Aircraft Near Cockpit Before Departure at Dallas Airport; Police Launched Probe and Onboarders Distraught

A Southwest Airlines flight departing from Dallas had to return to its gate after a bullet hit the aircraft before takeoff.

On Friday, Nov. 15, Flight 2494 was getting ready to depart from Dallas Love Field Airport when it was hit by gunfire close to the cockpit, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA reported that the Boeing 737-800 was en route to Indianapolis International Airport before the shooting incident.

A spokesperson for Southwest informed PEOPLE on Saturday, Nov. 16 that there were no reported injuries.

The source of the gunfire remains uncertain.

A shooting occurred while the crew was getting ready to leave. The aircraft then returned to the terminal without incident, according to the statement from the Southwest representative.

It was reported that “a bullet seemingly hit the right side of the aircraft just below the flight deck.”

“Southwest accommodated our Customers on another flight,” the airline representative also said. “Law enforcement authorities have been notified and the plane has been removed from service.”

A representative from Dallas Love Field Airport informed PEOPLE that the incident prompted a response from both the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire Rescue.

Runway 13R/31L was briefly closed for an investigation by police before it reopened. The airport stated on Facebook that airline operations were “minimally impacted.”

The Dallas Police Department stated to PEOPLE on Nov. 16 that they responded to a shooting call at approximately 9:48 p.m. and are the primary agency handling the ongoing investigation.

A Spirit Airlines flight was struck by gunfire in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, shortly after departing from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., according to The Hill, during the same week as the incident.
