A driver who was thought to be drunk led police on a chase from Fraser to Detroit. Warren police helped end the chase. But then they stopped, which they told FOX 2 was not in line with their rules.
Warren police say that on November 22, 2018, at around 11 p.m., Fraser police tried to stop a driver they thought was drunk near Groesbeck and Masonic. They tried but failed, and a slow-moving chase started that was going toward Warren.
“Fraser asked marked units to help as the pursuit went south on Groesbeck from their city into our city,” said Lt. John Gajewski of the Warren Police Department. “Our units came to help and tried to put tire deflation devices on the suspect vehicle.” Sad to say, the suspect car was able to get past the devices.
Gajewski says the chase then went south and ended in Detroit. Warren cops split up as soon as it got into the city.
“That’s when Fraser decided to stop the chase.” “We also followed up with firing,” he said.
Police in Fraser say the investigation is still going on and they couldn’t say for sure if the suspect had been arrested.
Gajewski says that when it comes to the chase, they have to do what the host agency wants.
“They do it case by case and agency by agency.” As an example, he said, “If it were a very violent crime, we probably wouldn’t fire them, and we wouldn’t expect another agency to either.”
He says that when it comes to chases, police are always listening closely to each other’s radios to see if they need help. They also act right away when they get the call, like what happened that Sunday night.
“We had two units that were kind of hurt.” Other units were trying to block roads to keep people safe and end the chase.
Because another goal of theirs is to keep other cars and pedestrians safe.
“There is a risk to the public, and we need to get that right.” Everyone in the neighborhood must be safe. With the need to arrest people who break the law. “We don’t want to make it easier for people to get away from the police,” he said.
Police in Warren say that you should pull over if you ever find yourself in the middle of a police chase or see one coming. Their job is to keep people safe.
