Arizona Firefighters Left Toddler in Car while Shopping; Awaiting Trial after Bystanders Informed Authorities

Two former Phoenix firefighters are facing trial for alleged felony child abuse.

In September 2023, court documents revealed that Charles Boggiano and Jacqueline Arnold, both firefighters, left their 2-year-old son alone inside their truck while they went shopping at the 5.11 Tactical store.

A concerned individual dialed 911 upon noticing the child approximately 15 minutes after his parents had entered a location.

“This timeframe may have been longer had it not been for Boggiano seeing the complainant walk over and look inside the truck while on the phone,” the court documents read.

According to investigators, the temperature outside that day was approximately 96 degrees.

Both parents are facing charges of felony child abuse.

The parents were interviewed by the Department of Child Services. According to both parents, Boggiano remained in the truck until it was necessary for him to bring Arnold her wallet inside the store.

According to court documents, the parents were captured on surveillance footage entering the store together.

The documents stated, “The two are seen shopping inside the store while the young child, who would have no means to protect himself from a stranger or the elements, sat helpless inside the truck unattended and alone, Furthermore, the child victim had no way to alert his parents if he was in danger, not adjust the temperature inside the truck if needed. The child was completely vulnerable to his surroundings.”

The Phoenix Fire Department acknowledged the incident on Aug. 12, stating, “We are aware of this incident.” Both individuals involved have been fired.

According to Arnold’s attorney, the air conditioner was turned on inside the truck, as reported to FOX-10 on Aug. 13. Police have not confirmed that.

According to Arnold’s attorney, a trial is anticipated to occur next year.
