A new bill in D.C. aims to increase competition for mobile sports betting

A new legislative proposal, the Sports Wagering Amendment Act of 2024, has been introduced by Council Member Kenyan R. McDuffie of Washington, D.C., aiming to rejuvenate the city’s struggling sports gambling sector. This bill seeks to reform the existing licensing framework, thereby enhancing competition among mobile sports betting services and providing a more profitable and engaging betting environment for residents and visitors.

Introduced on Wednesday, the legislation targets the enhancement of the city’s underperforming sports betting infrastructure, particularly addressing the deficiencies of GambetDC, the district’s sole provider.

Despite initial projections, GambetDC has significantly underperformed, generating a mere $4.3 million since its 2020 inception against an anticipated $84 million. This shortfall highlighted the platform’s shortcomings in user interface, odds, and overall usability.

In response to these challenges, the D.C. Council, alongside the Office of Lottery and Gaming, has initiated changes, including transitioning the operational reins to FanDuel this spring.
