Trinity County Sheriff Issues Holiday Warning After Drowsy Driving Crash

The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office is urging Texans to stay alert on the roads this holiday season after a driver who was tired behind the wheel crashed into an 18-wheeler early Thursday morning. The incident, caught on video, highlights the growing concerns around drowsy driving during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Video Shows Driver Swerving Before Crashing Into 18-Wheeler

Deputies released footage showing a passenger vehicle swerving in and out of its lane before colliding with a commercial truck. Authorities say the driver suffered only minor injuries, but several vehicles were damaged in the crash.

The sheriff’s office said they first received a report of a reckless driver early Thursday. Although deputies were unable to stop the vehicle in time, they continued following it until the moment it slammed into the 18-wheeler.

Investigators later determined the driver was fatigued, adding that alcohol was not a factor.

Officials Warn About Dangers of Drowsy Driving

Law enforcement says the crash serves as a critical reminder of the dangers associated with driving while tired. With millions of people traveling for the holidays, officials are urging the public to be vigilant and recognize the risks.

AAA spokesperson Daniel Armbruster emphasized the seriousness of drowsy driving.

“Drowsy driving can be just as serious as drunk driving,” Armbruster said. “It affects reaction time, decision-making, and awareness.”

AAA Shares Safety Tips to Prevent Fatigue-Related Crashes

AAA recommends several precautions to avoid drowsy driving, especially during long road trips:

  • Get a full night’s sleep before traveling
  • Take breaks every two hours
  • Share driving responsibilities when possible
  • Pull over safely if you start to feel tired
  • Watch for warning signs such as heavy eyelids, lane drifting, or difficulty focusing

Loved ones are also encouraged to intervene if a driver appears too tired to operate a vehicle safely.

Highway Safety Remains a Priority Through the Holidays

Authorities say staying well-rested and alert can prevent serious or even fatal crashes. As holiday travel ramps up, law enforcement will continue reminding drivers to prioritize safety, avoid fatigue, and remain attentive on the road.
