Suspect Arrested for Stealing French Bulldog in San Francisco’s Castro District; Dog Still Missing

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — San Francisco police have arrested a man suspected of stealing a French bulldog from its owner in the city’s Castro District, though the beloved pet remains missing, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Arrest Made in Brazen Dog Theft

According to the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), the theft occurred around 11:44 p.m. on December 10 in the 400 block of Castro Street. The victim told police that their tan-colored French bulldog, named Hank, was standing on the sidewalk when a man suddenly grabbed the dog and fled the scene on foot.

Hank, a 5-year-old fawn French bulldog with a black mask and stocky build, is valued at more than $950, police said.

Following an investigation, officers identified 44-year-old Dante Shaw of Oakland as the suspect. Detectives obtained a search warrant for his vehicle, and on Wednesday, police located Shaw inside his car near San Carlos Avenue and High Street in East Oakland, where he was detained without incident.

Evidence Found but Dog Still Missing

Investigators reported finding evidence connected to the theft inside Shaw’s vehicle, but Hank the bulldog was not located. Shaw was booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of grand theft.

The arrest comes amid growing concern from pet owners citywide, as French bulldogs—known for their popularity and high resale value—have increasingly become targets of theft in the Bay Area.

Police Seek Public’s Help

Authorities are urging anyone who has seen Hank or has information about his whereabouts to come forward. Residents can contact SFPD’s tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text TIP411 with the message beginning “SFPD.”

Police said the investigation remains active and officers are continuing efforts to reunite Hank with his owner. Stay with HonkNews.com for updates on this developing story and other San Francisco crime reports.
