Weather Awareness: Series of Rain Storms Expected Through Christmas Week

SONOMA, Calif. — The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting a series of winter storms that will impact Sonoma and surrounding areas through Christmas morning (December 25). While widespread flooding is not expected, forecasters warn that the storms could bring periods of steady rain, gusty winds, and localized impacts — potentially disrupting holiday travel and outdoor plans.

Series of Storms to Impact Northern and Central California

According to the NWS “Holiday Series of Storms” graphic, multiple moisture plumes are expected to track across Northern and Central California beginning Saturday, December 21, continuing into the following week.

Forecasters predict aggregate rainfall totals could be significant, with wind gusts topping 25 mph, especially Sunday through Monday night. The agency cautions residents about the risk of minor landslides, fallen branches, localized flooding, and brief power outages.

Officials described the overall weather pattern as a moderate threat, emphasizing that conditions could shift quickly as the storm systems move across the region.

City Preparation and Resident Readiness

In anticipation of the storms, Sonoma city crews have increased street sweeping and storm drain clearing. Sand supplies have been restocked at Depot Park, and sandbags replenished near the front entrance of City Hall.

City officials are urging residents to take the following precautionary measures:

  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters and storm drains.
  • Secure outdoor furniture and holiday decorations.
  • Prepare sandbags if your property is flood-prone.
  • Charge electronic devices and keep flashlights ready for power outages.
  • Drive carefully and allow extra travel time during heavy rainfall.

Sandbag Locations

Residents can access free sand and sandbags at several self-serve filling stations:

  • Depot Park (270 1st Street West): Sand available for Sonoma residents (bring your own shovel).
  • City Hall (177 1st Street West): Sandbags available in the front alcove (limit 10 per resident).
  • Felder Road & Arnold Drive: County-staged site offering sand and bags (do not cross caution tape).

Additional sandbags can be purchased at Friedman’s Home Improvement Center (1360 Broadway). The city also provides online guides on how to fill and stack sandbags effectively.
