REDMOND, Ore. — A fatal crash involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck shut down both directions of Highway 97 south of Redmond on Tuesday evening, according to the Oregon State Police (OSP).
Deadly Collision Near Milepost 127
The crash was reported around 5:34 p.m. near milepost 127, approximately five miles south of Redmond, OSP confirmed. Emergency crews responded to the scene where one person was pronounced dead following the collision. Officials have not yet released the victim’s identity or the cause of the crash.
Full Highway Closure and Major Delays
Initially, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) reported that only the northbound lanes were closed and advised motorists to “slow down and move over for worker safety.” However, by 6 p.m., the agency updated its advisory, confirming a full closure of Highway 97 and warning travelers to expect extended delays or use alternate routes.

Second Serious Crash in 24 Hours
This marks the second major crash on Highway 97 in less than 24 hours. A separate collision Monday evening also caused hours-long backups between Bend and Redmond, further compounding travel issues along the busy corridor.

Oregon State Police, Redmond Fire crews, and ODOT officials remain on scene as of Tuesday night. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area until the highway reopens.
