Suspect Arrested in Fatal Maui Hit-and-Run Crash That Killed 19-Year-Old

PUKALANI, Hawaii — Maui police have arrested 31-year-old Kaleo Kubo, the suspected driver in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed 19-year-old Mason Pang on Haleakala Highway last week.

Deadly Crash on Haleakala Highway

According to the Maui Police Department (MPD), the crash happened around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday when Kubo allegedly made a left turn from Old Haleakala Highway onto westbound Haleakala Highway, colliding head-on with another vehicle.

Mason Pang, 19, suffered critical injuries and later died at the scene. A 32-year-old woman, who was reportedly a passenger in Kubo’s vehicle, was also injured in the collision.

Suspect Fled and Later Arrested

Authorities said Kubo fled the scene on foot following the crash, prompting an intensive multi-day search. On Monday, December 15, police confirmed that Kubo was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators have not yet released details about potential charges, but the incident is being treated as a fatal hit-and-run.
