Weather Alert: Active Weather Pattern Expected in Central Washington Through the Weekend

CHELAN COUNTY, Wash. — The National Weather Service (NWS) Spokane has issued a special weather statement for Central and Western Chelan County and Western Okanogan County that will remain in effect until 5 p.m. Saturday. The alert warns of an active and potentially hazardous weather pattern developing across the Cascades into next week.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Concerns Early Week

According to the NWS, moderate to heavy rain is expected to return Monday and Tuesday, bringing the potential for flooding of small streams and the Stehekin River. The agency cautioned that saturated conditions and runoff could also trigger mud and rock slides, particularly in steep terrain and burn scar areas.

“A very active weather pattern will occur in the Cascades next week,” the NWS said. “There will be an increased risk of mud and rock slides in areas of steep terrain and near burn scars.”

Significant Snow Expected Midweek

Forecasters say several rounds of heavy mountain snow and strong winds are likely to move into the region by Wednesday, continuing through Friday.

Stevens Pass is projected to receive over two feet of snow, with an 80% chance of that total being reached between Tuesday night and Friday. Snow levels could drop to valley floors at times, creating hazardous travel conditions across the region.

“Those living in or traveling through the Cascades should be prepared for impactful weather next week,” the NWS added.

Travel and Safety Precautions

Drivers are urged to monitor forecasts closely, check pass conditions, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather, including low visibility and icy roads. Residents in flood-prone areas should keep drainage clear, avoid unstable slopes, and stay alert for rising waters.

The special weather statement remains active until Saturday evening, but forecasters warn that additional alerts or warnings may be issued as the system develops.
