Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Eastern North Carolina on Monday and Tuesday

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — The National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield, Virginia, has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Eastern North Carolina, warning of light snow and hazardous travel conditions from Monday afternoon through midnight Tuesday.

Advisory Details

The alert, issued at 9:17 p.m. Sunday, is in effect for Pasquotank, Camden, Chowan, and Perquimans counties beginning Monday at 2 p.m. and lasting until Tuesday at midnight.

According to the NWS, 1 to 2 inches of snow are expected across the affected areas, with locally higher amounts possible in some spots.

“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the NWS said in its advisory. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday evening commute. Slow down and use caution while traveling.”

Potential Travel Impacts

Snow is expected to begin late Monday afternoon and continue into Monday night, potentially leading to slick and icy roads, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Commuters are urged to plan ahead and give themselves extra travel time.

Authorities advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall hours and to stay informed on road conditions and weather alerts throughout the advisory period.

Safety Tips from the National Weather Service

The NWS issued the following reminders to help drivers stay safe during winter weather:

  • Drive cautiously: Slow down and maintain extra space between vehicles.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Keep your gas tank full and carry essentials such as a scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, and blankets.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel: If stranded, stay in your vehicle, turn on hazard lights, and call for help.
  • Watch for downed power lines: Ice accumulation may cause branches or wires to fall—never touch them.
  • Allow room for snow plows: Give road crews plenty of space to operate safely.

Outlook

Light snow and cold conditions will continue into early Tuesday before tapering off overnight. Temperatures will remain near freezing, keeping the risk of icy roads in place for the Tuesday morning commute.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and stay connected for any updates or additional advisories.
