First Alert Weather: Cold Monday Ahead With Light Snow and Wintry Mix for the Ozarks

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A cold start to the week is on the way for the Ozarks as clouds and a weak storm system move in from the Rockies, bringing the potential for light snow, sleet, and freezing rain by midday Monday. While accumulations are expected to be minimal, drivers should plan for slick spots and slower travel through the afternoon and evening.

Light Snow and Wintry Mix Expected Monday

According to meteorologist Nick Kelly, the region will begin Monday with mostly cloudy skies but dry conditions for the morning commute. By midday, moisture returning to the area will allow for scattered snow showers with brief periods of sleet and freezing rain.

Through the afternoon and into the evening, a more organized band of light snow is forecast to develop across the northwestern Ozarks, gradually pushing east and southeast through the region. The system should exit by midnight Monday, leaving behind cold, dry air.

Minimal Accumulations and Ice Risk

Snow amounts are expected to remain light, with most locations seeing a dusting up to half an inch, and isolated areas—especially near Rolla and north of U.S. 54—possibly reaching 1 to 1.5 inches.

As for ice, only a light glaze is expected on elevated surfaces, mainly along and south of the Missouri–Arkansas line. Kelly emphasized that while the system doesn’t warrant an “Alert Day,” motorists should still exercise caution on bridges and untreated roads.

Week Ahead: Sunshine Returns, More Systems to Watch

After Monday’s brief wintry event, conditions will improve with dry weather and sunshine returning Tuesday through Thursday. Temperatures will remain chilly, with Tuesday morning lows in the lower 20s and highs climbing into the upper 30s to near 40°F.

By Friday, another wave could bring a morning wintry mix transitioning to rain in the afternoon. A second quick-moving system may bring a few isolated showers late Saturday, though confidence remains low on timing and intensity.

Temperature Outlook

The region will continue to bounce between the 30s and 40s for highs throughout the week. Wednesday should reach the mid-40s, cooling again into the mid-30s on Thursday, before a milder Saturday sees highs around 49°F.

While no major winter storm is expected, the combination of cold air and light precipitation Monday could make for slick travel conditions. Stay tuned to HonkNews.com for ongoing First Alert Weather updates and regional forecasts as the Ozarks transitions into a colder start to December.
