Wisconsin Fugitive Arrested in Killing of Alderman’s Nephew Extradited to Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A fugitive wanted in connection with a deadly October shooting that claimed the life of a Milwaukee alderman’s nephew has been extradited to Wisconsin following his arrest in Oklahoma, according to law enforcement officials.

Fugitive Captured and Returned to Milwaukee

37-year-old Martell Haire was booked into the Milwaukee County Jail on November 28, just days before his birthday, after being extradited from Norman, Oklahoma, where U.S. Marshals captured him earlier this month.

Authorities say Haire had been on the run for over a month after allegedly shooting three teenagers inside a home near 79th Street and Hampton Avenue on October 20.

The Deadly Shooting

According to the criminal complaint, the shooting stemmed from an argument over Haire’s comments referring to young girls as women. During the altercation, he allegedly opened fire on three teenagers.

One of the victims, 16-year-old Marquis Champion, a student at Bay View High School and the nephew of Milwaukee Common Council Alderman Mark Chambers Jr., died from his injuries.

Two other victims — an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old — were hospitalized but are expected to recover, investigators said.

Previous Charges and Threat Allegations

At the time of the shooting, Haire was already wanted on multiple charges, including child sexual assault, incest, and a separate case involving threats to shoot another man earlier in the summer.

While Haire was a fugitive, police heightened safety protocols after his family allegedly told investigators he planned to shoot a law enforcement officer if approached for arrest, according to a search warrant affidavit.

Haire denied the claim in a message to WISN from the Cleveland County Detention Center before his extradition, saying,

“I’ve never threatened, nor had intentions to harm police. It’s hearsay to make me look like a monster. I’m a man that just loves to cook.”

He also expressed condolences to the victims’ families, writing,

“I send my [condolences] to the families.”

Extradition and Next Steps

After his November 12 arrest in Oklahoma by the U.S. Marshals Service, Haire was held without bond until his return to Wisconsin. Jail records confirm his arrival in Milwaukee on November 28.

It remains unclear when Haire will make his initial court appearance in the homicide case.

Authorities say Haire faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, recklessly endangering safety, and firearm offenses, in addition to his previous criminal cases.
