PAINESVILLE, Ohio – A tragic shooting early Saturday morning has left a beloved local business owner and security guard dead outside Johnny Gringo Restaurant on Chester Street. The suspected shooter, 28-year-old Dylan Stalnecker, was subdued by bystanders before police arrived and later charged with murder, authorities confirmed.
Shooting and Arrest
The shooting occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m., when officers responded to reports of a man shot in the chest outside the restaurant. According to police radio transmissions, the firearm was “out of play” and a man was being detained by witnesses when officers arrived.
Stalnecker, who appeared battered and bruised in his booking photo, was restrained by civilians until police reached the scene. He was taken to a hospital for treatment before being booked into the Lake County Jail.
Victim Identified as Bo Martin
The victim was identified as Bo Martin, a well-known Mentor resident and owner of a local landscaping business. Martin was reportedly working as a security guard for Johnny Gringo Restaurant when the incident occurred.
Friends and fellow business owners described him as generous and deeply involved in the community.
“He had a great heart, he was a great guy, he would do anything for you,” said K.J., owner of Lux Auto Spa and Detail Shop next door. “He did my landscaping and worked security over there. We saw him every day.”
Martin was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries despite life-saving efforts from police and paramedics.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
A makeshift memorial of candles, balloons, and notes has been placed outside the restaurant’s entrance, with locals leaving messages reading “Rest in Peace Bo.” Many described the loss as devastating for the community.
“It’s a loss for the community for sure,” K.J. added. “We’ll miss him.”
Investigators have not yet disclosed what led to the deadly confrontation, and the case remains under active investigation by the Painesville Police Department.
Stalnecker is expected to appear in court later this week for his initial arraignment.
