ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. – A fatal crash in a construction zone on Interstate 64 left one person dead Tuesday morning, according to the Illinois State Police Department (ISP). The accident caused major traffic disruptions near milepost 14 in O’Fallon, where multiple vehicles collided just before 8 a.m.
Details of the Fatal Collision
Authorities said the crash involved two semi-trucks, a utility work truck, and a Ford Bronco. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene and confirmed that one person was killed. Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim or confirmed which vehicle they were in at the time of the crash.
State police said that no construction workers were injured, and there was no reported damage to Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) or other construction vehicles in the area.
Traffic in both directions was heavily impacted for several hours as investigators worked to reconstruct the scene and remove debris from the roadway. Lanes have since been reopened, but motorists experienced long delays throughout the morning commute.
Ongoing Investigation
The Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation to determine what caused the multi-vehicle collision. Investigators are reviewing dash camera footage and driver statements to understand the sequence of events leading up to the fatal impact.
Authorities have not confirmed whether speed, distraction, or weather played a role in the crash.
Construction Zone Safety Emphasis
Following the tragedy, ISP officials once again urged motorists to slow down and remain alert in work zones. Construction areas often involve narrow lanes, shifted traffic patterns, and sudden stops, increasing the risk of severe collisions.
“Every construction worker and driver deserves to go home safely,” an ISP spokesperson said. “We urge all motorists to reduce speed, eliminate distractions, and obey posted signs in work zones.”
The victim’s name will be released once next of kin are notified.
