Suspect Accused of Killing Kansas Pre-Med Student in Hit-and-Run Has Prior Criminal Record

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The man accused of killing a University of Kansas pre-med student in a hit-and-run crash last week has a lengthy criminal history, according to court documents reviewed by authorities.

The victim, 20-year-old Elsa McGrain, was struck and killed Thursday evening while jogging near Lawrence Regional Airport, police said. The driver of the white pickup truck involved in the crash allegedly fled the scene, sparking a widespread search that ended with the arrest of 36-year-old William Ray Klingler.

Tragic Incident Near Airport

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, McGrain was jogging around 6 p.m. Thursday when the truck hit her and sped away. Her body was discovered nearly nine hours later, at around 3:35 a.m., when a passerby called 911. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Klingler was arrested several days later after police received multiple tips from the public. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, though formal charges are still pending.

“Our hearts go out to Elsa’s family and friends in this incredibly tragic situation,” the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Victim Remembered as Compassionate and Inspiring

McGrain, a junior studying pre-medicine at the University of Kansas, was a member of the Chi Omega sorority, where she served on the organization’s executive board as house manager. Her sorority sisters shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, describing her as “genuine, kind, and full of light.”

“Elsa was the kind of person everyone wanted to be,” Chi Omega wrote. “She noticed the quiet one in the room, checked in on you whether things were good or bad, and was the loyal friend we all strive to be.”

Her family and friends say McGrain had dreams of becoming a doctor and helping others. She was expected to graduate in 2026.

Klingler’s Criminal Past

Court documents obtained by Fox News Digital show that William Ray Klingler has a history of criminal behavior and substance-related offenses spanning nearly two decades.

His record includes:

  • Two prior DUI arrests
  • Tampering with an ignition interlock device, a breathalyzer required for certain drivers
  • Violations for disabling ankle monitors while under supervision

As a juvenile in 2003, Klingler faced several charges, including burglary, criminal damage to property, and theft, for which he was placed under intensive probation.

The Kansas Department of Corrections confirmed that Klingler had previously served time for probation violations linked to those earlier offenses.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet revealed whether alcohol or drugs played a role in Thursday’s crash. However, investigators said forensic testing and vehicle analysis are underway as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office continues to ask anyone with information about Klingler’s movements or the vehicle — described as a white pickup truck with front-end damage — to contact detectives.

“This case underscores the devastating consequences of reckless driving,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said. “We are committed to seeking justice for Elsa and her loved ones.”

A Community in Mourning

The University of Kansas community is reeling from the loss of McGrain, described by classmates as a “bright, compassionate leader.” Campus organizations and sororities have begun organizing memorial services and candlelight vigils to honor her life.

Chi Omega’s message concluded:

“Her faith, kindness, and sisterhood will forever remain in our hearts.”

As the investigation continues, Klingler remains in custody without bond while prosecutors determine formal charges.
