48-Year-Old Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested at Augusta Motel

AUGUSTA, Ga. – A 48-year-old man wanted for attempted murder and multiple other violent offenses across two states has been arrested at a motel in Augusta, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies identified the suspect as Aaron J. Carter, who was taken into custody Friday morning after narcotics investigators executed a search warrant at the Studio Lodge located in the 1000 block of Claussen Road.

Multi-State Fugitive Captured

Authorities say Carter was wanted out of Columbia, South Carolina on charges of attempted murder and resisting arrest. He also faced several active warrants in Aiken, South Carolina, including armed robbery, burglary, assault and battery, forgery, and other felony offenses.

“Our investigators did an outstanding job locating and arresting Carter while removing dangerous drugs and weapons from our streets,” said Richmond County Sheriff Eugene Brantley. “However, more must be done to prevent repeat violent offenders and convicted felons from continuously being allowed back into our communities.”

Sheriff Brantley emphasized the importance of collaboration between local, state, and federal law enforcement to reduce repeat violent crime and keep dangerous individuals from reoffending.

Weapons and Drugs Seized

During the motel search, investigators reportedly seized fentanyl, methamphetamine, and multiple firearms. Carter now faces a series of new charges in Richmond County, including:

  • Trafficking fentanyl
  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime (three counts)
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

Authorities said the operation successfully removed both drugs and weapons from circulation, preventing potential harm to the public.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Carter remains in custody at the Richmond County Detention Center while awaiting extradition to South Carolina to face the outstanding warrants in both Columbia and Aiken counties.

Officials described the arrest as part of a coordinated effort between narcotics investigators and fugitive task forces, targeting individuals involved in violent crime and drug trafficking operations in the Central Savannah River Area.

Law Enforcement Praises Local Coordination

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office commended the quick collaboration between multiple agencies that led to Carter’s arrest. Sheriff Brantley added that such proactive measures are vital for maintaining community safety.

“Actions like these make Augusta safer for everyone,” he said. “We must continue working together to ensure our communities are protected from repeat violent offenders.”

Carter’s arrest brings to an end a multi-state search that had spanned several months and involved extensive coordination across county and state lines.
