NEW JERESY – A Frost Advisory is in effect for Sussex County overnight Thursday as clear skies and light winds are expected to bring temperatures down into the upper 30s by early Friday morning. Forecasters warn that inland and sheltered areas could see widespread frost, marking one of the coldest nights of the fall season so far.
Cold Overnight Conditions to Bring Frost Formation
According to local weather officials, the advisory will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday through early Friday morning, as ideal cooling conditions allow frost to form on exposed surfaces.
“With clear skies and diminishing winds, we’re expecting rapid temperature drops late tonight,” forecasters said. “Residents should take precautions to protect sensitive plants and outdoor items from frost damage.”
Overnight lows are forecast to reach around 37°F in inland zones, while coastal areas will remain slightly warmer thanks to moderating sea breezes.
Friday Brings a Warm Rebound
Fortunately, the chill won’t last long. Friday is expected to be mostly sunny and milder, with afternoon highs near 64°F. Winds will remain light, and the day will offer a noticeable improvement from the frosty morning start.
Friday night will turn cloudier and warmer, with lows near 52°F and a 60% chance of rain after midnight as the next system approaches the Delmarva Peninsula.
Precautions for Residents and Gardeners
With frost expected in many low-lying and inland areas, officials are advising residents to protect tender plants and outdoor equipment ahead of the cold snap.
Recommended steps include:
- Bring potted plants indoors or cover them with breathable fabric overnight.
- Disconnect or delay outdoor irrigation until after sunrise to prevent freezing damage.
- Allow extra time in the morning to clear frost from car windshields and driveways.
- Exercise caution on slick sidewalks or driveways, especially before 8 a.m. Friday.
“Even a brief frost can damage vegetation like tomatoes, basil, and hanging baskets,” local horticultural experts warned. “Taking simple steps tonight can save you from replacing plants later this fall.”
Coastal and Bayside Areas
While coastal neighborhoods will be somewhat insulated from the cold, marshy and tidal flats could still see light frost formation. Landscaping near these zones may need additional protection.
Looking Ahead: Spotty Frost Still Possible
The frost risk will ease by Friday afternoon as temperatures climb, but meteorologists note that similar conditions may return in inland valleys under clear skies later in the week. The greatest risk of spotty frost will continue for low-lying areas away from the coast, especially where cold air tends to pool overnight.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and take precautions on nights with clear skies and calm winds.
