Twelve people were hurt when a tour bus crashed early Sunday morning in the greater Los Angeles area. One person died.
The bus hit an SUV, and the SUV was fully on fire by the time the fire department arrived, according to the L.A. County Fire Department. 32 people have been taken to the hospital, and two are in serious condition.
The terrible accident on Mother’s Day happened on the Route 60 road in Hacienda Heights, a town in the greater San Gabriel Valley to the east of Los Angeles.
Zachary Salazar, an officer with the California Highway Patrol, told NBC Los Angeles that the SUV’s driver died while stuck inside the car after it caught fire.
In an update, the fire department said that 26 of the 32 people they took to the hospital had minor injuries. Thirty of the people on board were not hurt and were able to leave the scene without needing medical care.
Video from NBC Los Angeles showed that the bus’s windscreen was broken and the front end was badly damaged.
The crash happened “so quickly,” and KTLA 5 heard that “everyone tried to stop, but there was just not enough time.”
