At least 10 people have been hospitalised in California and Nevada because of a listeria outbreak. The FDA and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention are looking into it, the FDA said in a statement Saturday.
Fresh & Ready Foods LLC of San Fernando, California, is recalling ready-to-eat foods on its own, according to the company.
The recall covers more than 80 different items, such as snack boxes, sandwiches, and soups. The recalled items are from Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away. Their “best-by” dates are April 22 to May 19.
The recalled goods were sold in hospitals, hotels, corporate offices, convenience shops, airports, airlines, and other places in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington.
“FDA and CDC started looking into this cluster in 2024,” the FDA said. “However, there wasn’t enough evidence in that investigation to find the source of the outbreak.” “The investigation was started again in April 2025 after listeria was found in samples of the environment taken from Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC during a regular surveillance inspection.”
Whole genome sequencing was used to connect the strain of listeria found at Fresh & Ready Foods with the illness cluster.
The company said in a release that it had taken immediate corrective steps, such as taking away equipment, to deal with the problem. This was done to ensure ongoing food safety and compliance with FDA guidelines.
Eight of the people who were hospitalised with the 10 known illnesses did so in California and two in Nevada.
According to the FDA, signs of listeriosis, or a listeria illness, usually show up two weeks after eating food that was contaminated. However, they can show up anywhere from the day of consumption to ten weeks later.
The FDA tells people who bought or got the recalled goods to clean and sanitise any surfaces or foods they may have touched. This is because listeria is easily spread to other foods and surfaces.
The FDA tells people who are at higher risk, like pregnant women and babies, people 65 and older, and people whose immune systems aren’t working as well, to see a doctor right away if they start to feel sick or have symptoms like fever, nausea, muscle aches, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
