May SNAP Payments Begin Millions of Texans to Receive Benefits This Month

As the month of May begins, millions of Americans are set to receive their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, commonly known as food stamps. The program, one of the most vital nutritional and financial support systems in U.S. history, reaches more than 42 million individuals across all 50 states and the District of Columbia — accounting for approximately 12.6% of the nation’s population.

In Texas, where more than 3.4 million households rely on SNAP, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) manages the distribution of these crucial benefits. Unlike some states with fixed payment dates, Texas distributes SNAP benefits over 28 days each month, depending on the household’s certification date and Eligibility Determination Group (EDG) number.
