Tom Homan, who is in charge of the border, talked about the Trump administration’s efforts to remove people and said that parents of children born in the U.S. are not “immune” from being deported.
“Having a U.S. citizen child doesn’t protect you from our laws,” Homan said on “Face the Nation” on CBS News on Sunday.
“Government agents separate American families every day.”
A federal judge set off an alarm just a few days ago after lawyers said the Trump administration was deporting a U.S. citizen child without “meaningful process.”
The child, her sister, and their mother, who was in the country illegally, were all sent back to their home country. Her dad asked for her to be freed.
In Louisiana, there will be a hearing on the case on May 16.
Homan said it was the parents’ fault if they put their kids in that situation and defended the choice to deport them.
“Having a child who was born in the United States after coming here illegally is not a free pass,” he said.
He also said that the child’s mother took her with her when she was deported, which he called “parenting 101” because the mother could have left the child with a family member or another partner.
Margaret Brennan, the show’s host, said that the father who made the petition tried to make plans to keep the child safe but could only talk on the phone for a short time. Homan fought back, and then she ended the interview.
“That’s up to the parents to decide.” It is not a government choice. “It’s up to the parents,” he said.
