New Details Emerge After Fatal Car Crash in San Jacinto River Near Channelview

Channelview, Texas – A woman has been identified as a victim in a Channelview incident that involved a car driving into a river. Officials said the mom and her infant died on the scene, while two other children were taken to the hospital.

The accident occurred in a branch of the San Jacinto River on Market Street. Deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Friday.

According to Harris County investigators, Crystal Njepu was travelling west on Market Street when she experienced a suspected medical emergency.

Due to the emergency, her vehicle moved onto the gravel on the south side of the road. According to officials, the vehicle accelerated, passed through a grassy area, and then entered the river.

The vehicle began to sink swiftly, and a current carried it beneath a bridge.

Authorities extracted Njpepu and a baby girl from the truck, but both were confirmed dead on the site.

Officials claim a witness went into the lake and shattered the vehicle’s back window. The witness was able to save one individual in the front passenger seat and another in the back, left passenger seat.

Officials at the site claimed the two retrieved victims were children, likely aged five and seven. They were transferred to a hospital and are likely to recover.
