A 25-year-old Las Vegas man was detained following a horrific crash over the weekend that killed one person and injured numerous others.
Fredrick Tuiletufuga was arrested on Saturday after a crash on westbound Summerlin Parkway near Anasazi Drive. According to Nevada State Police, Tuiletufuga was driving a Jeep Wrangler when he collided with an abandoned Toyota Camry parked on the right shoulder.
The accident forced the Jeep to veer off the road and topple. While overturning, a passenger in the Jeep was thrown out. The Jeep continued west before plunging back down the concrete slope beneath the Anasazi Drive flyover.
A passenger identified as 22-year-old Grat Walker of Las Vegas was pronounced deceased on the scene. Tuiletufuga and two others were sent to a neighbouring hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Tuiletufuga was arrested after police detected symptoms of impairment. He was placed into the Clark County Detention Centre on several charges, including felony DUI resulting in death or serious bodily harm and failing to maintain a travel lane. Police say they also discovered marijuana in the vehicle.
Tuiletufuga’s blood alcohol concentration was .16, double the legal limit of.08.
Tuiletufuga made his first court appearance on Tuesday and was released on recognisance. He was due back in court on Thursday.
The Nevada Highway Patrol reminds drivers to make safe and responsible decisions. Driving under the influence remains a top cause of fatal crashes on Nevada roads. Troopers advise everyone to never drive while impaired. The dangers are prohibitively great, and the consequences can be disastrous.
